Below are some general resources that you may find useful. This list is not exhaustive and though I try to keep this up-to-date there may be errors and you are advised to conduct your own searches. Your GP is also potentially an excellent resource and can give guidance on a wide range of areas, as well as referring you to specific resources:

If in crisis

If you are experiencing significant mental health distress and require urgent support, we encourage you to contact any of the below organisations for immediate assistance:

  • Breathing Space: 0800 83 85 87
  • NHS: 111 (or 999 in emergencies)
  • Samaritans: 116 123

Suicide

  • In the UK and Irish Republic contact Samaritans on 116 123 or email jo@samaritans.org. Samaritans has a support line for health and social care workers and volunteers. in England (0800 069 6222) and Wales (0800 484 0555 - English; 0808 164 2777 - Welsh).
  • Mind Infoline on 0300 123 3393 9am to 6pm, Monday to Friday (except for bank holidays) or by email info@mind.org.uk or text 86463.
  • For a list of mental health support services for you or someone you know visit the Rethink Mental Illness website.
  • A list of NHS-recommended mental health charities can be found online.

Domestic abuse / violence

  • Refuge has a freephone, 24-hour National Domestic Abuse Helpline 0808 2000 247.
  • Women's Aid can be emailed at helpline@womensaid.org.uk.
  • Galop, the LGBT+ anti-violence charity 0800 999 5428

LGBTQ+

  • Terrence Higgins Trust, a leading HIV and sexual health charity in the UK that supports people living with HIV. They are also key advocates for good sexual health. Call THT Direct on 0808 802 1221 for support, advice and information or email us on info@tht.org.uk. Open: 10am to 6pm, Monday to Friday, 10am to 1pm, Saturday and Sunday.
  • Gay Switchboard 0300 330 0630, open 10:00-22:00 every day. Email chris@switchboard.lgbt, and emails are typically replied to within 72 hours.
  • Being gay is okay: Information and advice for gay, lesbian, bisexual and unsure under twenty-fives. http://www.bgiok.org.uk/

Sexual health

  • GMFA (Gay Men Fighting AIDS)
  • SHL.UK is a discreet service for Londoners who have no symptoms or mild symptoms. If you have symptoms please contact your local sexual health clinic
  • The Red School is a radical new approach to women's health, creativity, leadership and spiritual life (https://www.redschool.net/)

Age

  • Age UK Advice Line on freephone 0800 055 6112 from 8am to 7pm 365 days a year

Bereavement

  • Cruse Bereavement Care can be contacted on 0808 808 1677. Calls are free and confidential.

Relationships

  • For parenting and family support in England and Wales contact Family Lives on 0808 800 2222; in Scotland contact Parentline Scotland (08000 28 22 33).
  • For relationship issues with a partner, family or friends call The Spark (freephone 0808 802 2088) and Parenline NI in Northern Ireland (0808 8010 722).
  • For paid-for relationship and family counselling services across the UK contact Relate on 0300 0030396 or contact your local Relate office.
